FAQ – Your questions, our answers
How many players are on a team?
A team has at least six players, but you only need four to show up on match day to play.
You can add new players at any time during the season. Most teams have around eight or nine members.
There are no rules about how your team is made up – women, men, and non-binary players are all equally welcome. What really counts is your commitment, your skills, and the team spirit you bring to the court.
Do all players on a team have to come from the same club?
No, teams can be put together however you like. A team manager handles registration and coordinates with the other teams.
That said, many teams proudly represent their home clubs, which often cover membership fees and support the organization of match days.
Individual sign-ups aren’t possible, but sometimes we can help find you a team. Individual sign-ups aren’t possible, but sometimes we can help find you a team. If you’re looking for one, just email mitgliedschaft@qubali.de.
How many teams play in the league?
In the current 2025 season, 27 teams are participating – and the number is growing. Teams are grouped based on skill level and region, with each group consisting of five to eight teams of similar strength. Matches are played in a home-and-away format. Promotion and relegation lead to new and exciting group line-ups in the following season.
What skill levels does the league offer?
Currently, there are four divisions ranging from Level A down to C-minus. Teams are grouped by skill level and region, mainly based on last season’s results.
New teams unsure about their level are welcome to contact our head of match operations Stefan at spielbetrieb@qubali.de. We’re happy to help you figure it out.
Players with no tournament or league experience are warmly welcome to join and can simply register with their regular playing group.
What happens on a match day?
A match day consists of several contests between two teams, which we call “ties.”
In each tie, five matches are played: three doubles and two singles, each following international rules with best-of-two sets. The team that wins the most matches wins the tie.
Each team faces several other teams in succession and plays around 20 to 25 matches in total over the course of the day.
How many matches does each player play? Does everyone play singles and doubles?
Depending on the group size, each team plays around 20 to 25 matches on a match day – that adds up to about 32 to 40 player spots for team members to fill.
In every tie between two teams, there are three doubles and two singles matches. This means a team can use up to eight players. Since each player can play two matches, a tie can also be played with just four people.
You decide the lineup yourselves: each team chooses who plays how many matches and whether someone plays singles or doubles.
When are the match days?
The match days are scheduled by you and the other teams – whatever works best for everyone.
The entire season takes place on two to three Saturdays per year. On each match day, every team faces several other teams in their group.
At the annual delegates’ meeting, groups for the next season are formed, and suitable dates are chosen. This way, match days are already known in advance, and conflicts with queer tournaments or the regular league schedule can be avoided.
You can find the dates for the current 2025 season here.
Where do the match days take place?
In your city? Or ours? That’s up to you!
Each group has home and away matches. Match days are hosted by one of the teams in their city, while the other teams in the group travel there. The groups are organized regionally to keep travel distances as short as possible.
Exact locations and dates are agreed on by the teams in each group before the season starts. It’s not required for every team to host a match day each season – but rotating venues from season to season is encouraged
How much does it cost to join the league?
The annual fee is €25 per player. This covers shuttlecocks, basic refreshments on the two to three match days, and organizational costs.
Many clubs cover this fee for their members – it’s best to check with your club’s board directly.
Feather or plastic – and who pays for them?
The teams in each group agree before the season starts on which type of shuttlecocks they want to use.
The league will then centrally purchase and cover the cost of the selected shuttlecocks.
